How to Hang a Punching Bag From the Ceiling
A punching bag is an essential piece of equipment in many gyms and garages and encourages speed, coordination and upper body and even all around strength and toning. You can hang a punching bag in your own garage or workout room, but doing so requires a little bit of thought and planning. A punching bag can take a lot of abuse, depending on your strength, and when used for training with not only boxing but kickboxing or other martial art sports, needs to be fastened correctly to provide optimal fitness benefits and to stay where you attach it. Protect your ceiling and provide the support the punching bag needs by following a few simple steps before you hang the bag.
Step 1
Determine the location where you want to hang a punching bag, making sure adequate space is allowed for swinging bag during use. Locate a stud beam in the ceiling at least 24 inches from a side wall if space is limited. You must find a stud beam to attach your bag to, or it may pull from the ceiling, not only damaging the ceiling but also anything under it, including you.
Drill a starter hole into the ceiling stud or beam, using a slightly smaller drill bit than the size of your eyebolt screw.
Step 2
Insert the eyebolt screw into the hole you just drilled, turning by hand to tighten. It may become increasingly difficult to tighten the eyebolt screw by hand as it enters the stud beam. You may use a pliers or a screwdriver (inserted into the eyebolt to create additional turning power) to complete tightening.
Step 3
Attach the chains at the top of the punching bag into a swivel hook and then attach to the S-hook prior to hanging onto the eyebolt hook. This will enable the bag to spin, reducing tension on the eyelet. You may need to shorten or lengthen the height of the bag depending on your own height and preferences. The punching bag should be securely anchored. Attach the S hook to the eyebolt.
