How to Properly Comb Wet Hair

Wet hair is extremely delicate and should be handled with care. When you get out of the shower, your soaking-wet hair can stretch, making it more susceptible to breakage. Combing wet hair can help rid it of tangles, but if done improperly can leave you open to damaged strands -- and a frizzy, unkempt look. Properly comb your wet hair to keep it healthy, shiny and smooth.

    Step 1

Comb a good-quality conditioner through your hair while you're still in the shower. Going without conditioner could save you time and money, but it can leave your hair tangled and tough to comb. By combing the conditioner in, root to tip, while in the shower, you ensure an even distribution of conditioner through your hair for smoother strands.

    Step 2

Pat and squeeze your hair dry with an absorbent towel when you're finished washing it. Avoid scrubbing it dry, which can rough up the hair cuticles and tangle your hair into knots. Pat it gently or twist your hair into a towel, and gently squeeze to remove excess moisture.

    Step 3

Choose a wide-tooth comb to comb your hair when it's wet. Never use a brush; the bristles are typically too fine to properly comb through and separate all of the strands.

    Step 4

Comb your hair by starting at the ends to gently work any tangles or knots so they are smooth. If you try to comb your hair from the roots to the ends, you could get caught on messy tangles and break the hair. Once a section has been properly worked and smoothed, move up higher and higher until your hair has been combed neatly.
