The elliptical trainer is one that, if used properly, can provide an intense workout. The results depend on you, however. The elliptical contains other disadvantages that may prohibit the full use of your body and prevent you from maximizing your workout.
Intensity
When you are working out on an elliptical trainer, the effort you put into the workout may be less than on other machines. An elliptical trainer does not push you while you are on it. No matter how fast you set the machine, you can either rest or slow down with no negative feedback from an elliptical. This leads to a less intense workout and fewer calories burned. Weight-bearing Exercise
You avoid applying pressure to all parts of your body when you work out on an elliptical trainer. This feature can be both good and bad. It is good because you receive a smooth ride on the machine. However, it can be bad if you want to prevent osteoporosis. In order to increase strength in your bones and muscles, you need to apply weight to them, which allows them to grow stronger. When you use an elliptical trainer, the lack of pressure can weaken your body.
Lower Body
Despite the fact that the elliptical trainer contains a spot for your arms to hold, it primarily focuses on the lower body. Since it focuses on this area, it limits the type of workout you receive. In order to fully work out your entire body, you will need to add different exercises for both the upper body and core. This can create a longer workout and more intense process, rather than working out in one quick swoop.
Motion
The motion of the elliptical trainer may be difficult for you to adjust to. When you combine the movement of your legs and arms, it can feel different and unnatural, which may cause you to dislike the elliptical trainer. This machine requires that you have some sort of coordination so that you can move you arms and legs in a forward motion at the same time.
