    Exercises to Do After Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition in which males experience enlarged breast tissue, similar to that of a woman's breasts. The Ohio State University Medical Center states that the word gynecomastia literally translates to "female breasts" and occurs when men undergo extreme hormonal changes. These changes typically occur during infancy, puberty and old age. Surgery options exist for men who are uncomfortable with the size of their breasts. Post gynecomastia surgery, doctors advise against overexerting yourself and suggest wearing protective compression garments, says Gynecomastia.org.

    Slow Walking

One of the easiest forms of exercises is walking. Set aside 15 to 30 minutes per day and walk and a slow to moderate pace. This option is best for the first two weeks of post operation. Work yourself up to 30 minutes of walking, but stop if you experience any pain.

    Basic Calisthenics and Stretching

After relaxing for your first couple of weeks post operation, slowly begin a gentle workout routine consisting of basic calisthenics.

Leg lifts Lay on your side with one arm stretched straight up and resting on the ground and the other resting on your body. Lift your top leg up approximately three to six inches and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat for the other side.

Arm lifts Select light dumbbell weights (3-5 lbs. is best) and hold one in each hand. Sit down on the edge of a chair with your back straight. Lift both hands up so they are perpendicular to your body and parallel to the ground. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat as you're able.

Stretching Do gentle stretching exercises that your body is comfortable with. Good options include lifting your arms above your head and reaching as high as you can and bending over at the waist as far as you're able.

    Low-Impact Cardiovascular

After two weeks of light work outs, you can move on to cardiovascular exercises. Stick to low-impact cardiovascular exercises that are easy on the body but still provide a decent work out. Exercise options include brisk walking, either outside or on a treadmill; stationary bicycle workouts; and an elliptical trainer program. Focus on working out the lower half of your body, which is mostly unaffected by gynecomastia surgery. Avoid weightlifting or working out the arms and chest until you've completely recovered from surgery and have your doctor's OK.
