    Tea for Gastritis

Gastritis is inflammation of your stomach's lining. The Better Health Channel website states that the principal cause of gastritis is infection with the Helicobacter pylori bacterium, although other factors -- alcohol consumption, certain prescription drugs -- may also cause this health problem. To better understand the role of tea, especially herbal tea, in treating your gastritis, meet with your family physician. Your doctor can explain to you the inherent risks, benefits and limitations of this natural treatment method.

    About Gastritis

Gastritis may or may not cause symptoms, and symptoms may range from mild to severe. According to the Cleveland Clinic, possible gastritis-related symptoms include dark stools, suppressed appetite, abdominal bloating, nausea and vomiting and hiccups. Certain tests may be performed if your doctor suspects you have gastritis, including a stool test, a blood test and endoscopy -- a procedure that involves the use of a thin tube and small camera to assess your stomach lining.

    Beneficial Herbal Teas

Numerous herbs may be consumed as a tea to help treat your gastritis. In his book "The Natural Pharmacy," medical doctor Alan R. Gaby states that some of the most beneficial herbs for this health purpose may include chamomile, goldenseal, licorice, marshmallow, slippery elm and wood betony. Gaby notes that many of the herbal teas used in treating gastritis may also be helpful in treating peptic ulcers. A larger body of scientific research evidence may be required to evaluate to true efficacy of herbal teas traditionally used in treating gastritis.

    Featured Herbal Tea

Chamomile tea may be particularly helpful in treating your gastritis. Naturopathic physician Sharol Tilgner, author of "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," states that chamomile tea has historically been used in treating gastritis, gastric ulcers, indigestion and intestinal gas. This herbal tea possesses anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antibacterial action. Tilgner suggests making an infusion using 1 heaping tablespoon of fresh chamomile flowers per cup of water. Further scientific inquiry may be needed to assess the true efficacy of this herbal tea for this health purpose.

    Warning

Gastritis is a condition that often requires medical attention and intervention to help resolve. Gastritis may lead to several health complications if it is not treated in an appropriate manner, including blood loss and a heightened risk for gastric cancer. Discuss all possible therapies for this health problem with your primary-care provider, including natural treatment measures such as herbal teas. Some herbal teas may cause unwanted health effects if they are not used properly.
